Just as individuals express their individuality through their identity, so organizations try to differentiate themselves through their choice of name, their logo, slogans or other elements unique to them. Branding used to be predominantly for promoting and advertising consumer products, but nowadays it has much wider relevance as every business is urged to differentiate itself from the competition through its brand. Trademarks are tools for protecting the reputation and goodwill of a business. They enable your customers to recognise your products and services. MORE
What is the first step in registering a trademark?
The first step in registering a trademark is to have a search to find out whether the way is clear for you to apply to register your mark. Apply and pay for a search on-line, to first establish whether your mark is sufficiently distinctive to be registered, whether anyone else’s registration would get in your way, and whether any slight adjustments would help your trademark have an easier ride.
Will a UK trademark be enough?
Trademarks are territorial. This means you need to register your mark in the country in which you do business in the ‘class’ or classes relevant to your business.
If your product or service is mainly available in the UK, then a UK registration will be enough.
However if you also do business in the European Union, then you should consider filing for a Community Trade Mark or CTM for short instead of a UK one.
If you will be providing goods or services in non EU countries too, then you should consider filing internationally. Mention it to us, and we will send you more information. Essentially you are likely to simply need to file a UK or CTM application. Then discuss with us which other countries you will want to include within an extended international application.
